What they are
Nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor are proteins supporting neuron survival, differentiation and synaptic plasticity. BDNF is heavily studied in the context of learning and memory, and its expression is activity-dependent.
How they are measured
Usually as messenger RNA or protein level in tissue or culture. Both are indirect: an increase in expression is not the same as an increase in functional signalling, since processing, release and receptor availability all intervene.
Why to read the endpoint carefully
"Increases BDNF expression" is among the most frequently quoted findings in this area and among the most over-interpreted. It is a measurement in a specific model, and it does not establish a functional consequence in that model, let alone another.
